The Things Saving My Life Right Now

Alternatively titled: the handful of things bringing me daily joy as autumn rolls in.

It’s blustery in the mornings these days. When I pick up my son from school I see children carrying fluffy coats made for wintery days. Coats that were needed at the bus stop that morning but can be discarded just as quickly by lunch time. Autumn is tip-toeing her way into the south, bringing colorful, rustling leaves and frost-kissed grass.

With autumn comes just a few things that are saving my life these days. Bringing me daily joy as the seasons change, the air cools, and time seems to slow down, just a bit.

  1. Wearing whimsical clothing and self-made garments. I started volunteering in my son’s school library last month and discovered the joy I get from wearing whimsical or themed tops, dresses, and accessories. So far, I’ve worn book-themed socks, a book-covered dress, and this dress covered in cats topped with a cardigan I hand-knit last spring. They’re quirky and comfy, and so so fun!

  2. Reading by the fire. It’s been cool enough in the mornings that we’ve used our fireplace to ease into the day. Once we’ve finished breakfast, I’ll curl up with a book on the sofa by the fire and dive in for a toasty literary journey into my morning.

  3. Nail Art. I bought a nail brush kit last week on impulse and already love all that I can do with it. Over the weekend I decided to branch out from polka-dots and tried some deco-inspired shapes on my fingertips and I am in love!

4. Knitting. It’s no secret I love working with my hands, and lately I’ve been satisfying that with an abundance of new knitting projects. I currently have on my needles three separate projects: a baby onesie, a sweater, and a cowl. It’s so easy to sit down and get lost in a project while watching TV, reading a book, or cheering my son on at swim team practice.

5. Volunteering at school. After two years without being able to volunteer in my son’s school due to COVID, our school finally was able to start inviting parent volunteers back in. I leapt at the opportunity to do so and every week I look forward to my chosen volunteer dates with excitement. At least once per week I help out in the school library with shelving books and love helping the kids find new things to read. Before fall break I helped with a school celebration that involved lots of bounce houses and energetic kids ready to jump, and while I left school sore that day, I was elated by the glee on every child’s face as they climbed, jumped and hopped their way toward fall break.

So tell me, what are a few things that are saving you these days?
